Do it Yourself Moving Guide
Rent-a-Son works with so many people who do their own moves to either save money or to avoid bad previous experiences with moving companies. Rent-a-Son sometimes find that diy movers are lacking informtaion and the planning skills for a save move so Rent-a-Son has put together a moving guide based on our experience and knowledge. Here is a list of things that we recommend when planning your move:
Start packing for your move early.
Packing is most definitely the largest and most time consuming aspect of your move. When you realize you are moving, set a schedule working backwards from your move date. Give yourself lots of time before the big move. Poor packing can end up costing you more during your moving day with higher labour and truck rental fees as well. It makes the move much more stressfull too! Get moving boxes or moving crates well in advance. You can start collecting them free at your local liquor or grocery store. Don’t overpack your moving boxes. They may break and it makes them harder to load and orgainze in your moving truck. Start the initial packing process by packing all of your belongings that are rarely used. Start wrapping your fragiles like dishes and kitchenware that you can live without for the few weeks. Empty out dressers, cabinets or any other items that will be too heavy to move if full. Once they are empty tape all doors and drawers shut to make them easier to move. Disassemble all furniture – place the hardware from the furniture into ziploc bags and tape it to the respective furniture so it is easier to find when you unpack. Other planning responsibilities for a successful move are; wrapping and protecting furniture, booking elevators or moving trucks, arranging for moving help and creating a general checklist for the day. Tips for loading your truck rental
Make sure when loading your moving truck to balance the weight throughout the truck. Stack the heavier items on the bottom and build up with the lighter items. Face the back of your furniture and dressors inwards. Use softer items to cushion things like art, pictures or other delicates. Moving and loading a truck is like a jigsaw puzzle. Some items are better loaded vertically then they are horizontally. Get a visual for how things will fit before starting your move. Cover your furniture with blankets in the truck and make sure your belongings are securely packed to avoid any shifting during the drive. Use rope and bungee to secure your furniture to the walls. We hope this has provided you with a good foundation for your move. We are proud of the fact that we are giving movers a third option but feel that you should have good sound advice in planning your move whether you use us for support or completey do the move yourself. We wish you all the best in your new home!
